There was no surprise when bottom-ranked Covadonga (0-18) was defeated at home by eighth ranked Gijon Basket (9-9) 75-58 on Sunday. Gijon Basket dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to Covadonga's 28. They outrebounded Covadonga 43-31 including 33 on the defensive glass. Center Sergio Martinez (208-1992) fired 18 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. American-Senegalese forward Cheikh Kebe (206-1997, college: FMU) chipped in a double-double by scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds. Alejandro Gomez (184-2004) produced 22 points and center Pablo Santiago (200-1999) added 8 points and 6 rebounds respectively for lost side. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Gijon Basket moved-up to seventh place, which they share with 5 other teams. Newly promoted Covadonga still closes the standings with 18 games lost. They share the position with Jorge Juan. Gijon Basket will meet at home La Flecha (#12) in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Covadonga will play against Estrada and hopes to get finally their first victory.
