Regular Season Round 21: GEIG - Maresme 65-57

There was a surprise result when ninth ranked GEIG (9-12) beat 4th placed Maresme (14-7) in Girona 65-57 on Saturday. Forward Vanessa Gonzalez (184-1994) nailed 8 points and 12 rebounds for the winning side and Helena Condom (-1999) accounted for 8 points and 10 rebounds. GEIG's coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Laia Soler (185-2001, college: Boise St.) came up with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 10 rebounds and forward Queralt Coll (188-1994, college: Campbellsville) added 13 points and 6 rebounds respectively for Maresme in the defeat. GEIG moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Barna and Lleida. Loser Maresme dropped to the fifth position with seven games lost. GEIG will meet higher ranked Mataro (#6) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Maresme's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Barcelona Segle XXI.
