Regular Season Round 29: Almansa - Alicante 87-74

There was an upset when higher ranked Alicante (17-12) was defeated on the road by fifteenth ranked Almansa (9-20) 87-74 on Saturday. Almansa dominated down low during the game scoring 44 of its points in the paint compared to Alicante's 24 and made 22-of-23 free shots (95.7 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was Argentinian-Italian guard Mateo Diaz (186-2002) who scored 19 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!). Bosnian forward Lazar Mutic (204-1999) chipped in 12 points. Four Almansa players scored in double figures. Lithuanian Osvaldas Matulionis (200-1991) produced 22 points and 6 rebounds and Icelandic point guard Aegir Steinarsson (185-1991, college: Newberry) added 25 points (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) respectively for the guests. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Almansa moved-up to thirteenth place, which they share with Caceres and Oviedo. Loser Alicante keeps the eighth position with 12 games lost. They share it with Gipuzkoa. Almansa will meet league's leader Andorra on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Alicante will play against Oviedo (#13) and hope to secure a win.
