There was an upset when higher ranked Girona (3-2) was defeated at home by sixteenth ranked Tenerife (2-3) 79-66 on Saturday. Strangely Girona outrebounded Tenerife 41-29 including 27 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The best player for the winners was the former international swingman Joan Sastre (201-1991) who scored 13 points and 4 steals. Canadian-Dutch forward Aaron Doornekamp (201-1985, college: Carleton, agency: Octagon Europe) chipped in 9 points and 4 assists. Nigerian point guard Ike Iroegbu (188-1995, college: WSU) produced 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists and Sergi Martinez (202-1999) added 13 points and 8 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Tenerife moved-up to tenth place, which they share with 4 other teams. Loser Girona dropped to the sixth position with two games lost. They share it with 3 other teams. Tenerife will meet at home league's leader Real Madrid in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Girona will play against Obradoiro (#13) in Santiago de Compostela and hope to secure a win.
