Regular Season Round 3: AEK - Apollon 100-70
Date: October 21, 2023
We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams in Athens where Apollon Patras (1-2) was crushed by AEK (1-2) 100-70. AEK outrebounded Apollon Patras 41-23 including a 31-15 advantage in defensive rebounds. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 23 assists. It was a good game for American Ben McLemore (196-1993, college: Kansas) who led his team to a victory with 26 points (perfect behind the arc making all five shots). His fellow American import forward Justin Tillman (203-1996, college: VCU) contributed with 18 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. American guard TJ Starks (188-1998, college: CSUN) answered with 22 points (went 8 for 8 at the free throw line) and power forward Panagiotis Filippakos (202-1994) added 16 points in the effort for Apollon Patras. Since the result was very predictable, it gave the chance for the coaches to test many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. AEK will play against Aris (#4) in Thessaloniki in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Apollon Patras will play at home against Kolossos HH and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
