Premijer Liga Round 15 (Regular Season): Brod na Savi edge Sibenik by three points

The most exciting game of round 15 in the Premijer Liga took place in Sibenik. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of second-best Sibenik (12-3) to first ranked Brod na Savi (14-1) 76-73 in the game for the first place. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Sibenik. Brod na Savi dominated down low during the game scoring 46 of its points in the paint compared to Sibenik's 18. The best player for the winners was the former international forward Ana-Marija Begic (190-1994) who had a double-double by scoring 21 points and 16 rebounds. American forward Tamia Ugass (190-2003, college: UMKC) chipped in 17 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was American guard Bendu Yeaney (178-1998, college: Oregon St.) who recorded 27 points and 5 rebounds. Brod na Savi have an impressive series of twelve victories in a row. They maintain first place with 14-1 record. Sibenik at the other side keeps the second position with three games lost. They share it with Zagreb and Tresnjevka. Brod na Savi are looking forward to face Zagreb (#3) at home in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Sibenik will play against Pozega and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
Bottom-ranked Medvescak (0-15) tried to put together a comeback for its first victory of the season, but they fell short in the 94-67 loss to third ranked Zagreb (12-3) in Zagreb. But it was rather predictable considering how strong their opponent was. It was a good game for Bosnian point guard Dragana Domuzin (174-2000) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 27 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists and 6 steals. Laura Zelnyte contributed with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists for the winners. Guard Marina Kusanovic (175-2008) answered with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) for Medvescak. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Zagreb. They moved-up to second place, which they share with Sibenik and Tresnjevka. Medvescak lost their fifteenth game in a row. They still close the standings with 15 games lost. Zagreb will play against league's leader Brod na Savi in Slavonski Brod in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Medvescak will play at home against Ragusa (#5) and hopes to get finally their first victory.

Worth to mention a quality performance of Iva Todoric who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 21 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists. Ragusa's coach Simona Soda felt very confident using 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was Una Majstorovic with 13 points. Defending champion maintains fifth place with 10-4 record. Split lost their seventh game in a row. Newly promoted team keeps the eleventh position with 14 games lost. Ragusa will meet bottom-ranked Medvescak (#12) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Split will play against Rijeka and hope to win that game.

Other games of round 15 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:

Rijeka - Zadar Plus 81-62

There was no surprise when 9th ranked Zadar Plus (3-11) were crushed on the road by seventh ranked Rijeka (7-8) 81-62 on Friday. Rijeka outrebounded Zadar Plus 50-30 including a 35-22 advantage in defensive rebounds. Rijeka looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. It was a great evening for Serbian power forward Marijana Zukanovic (189-1999, agency: Olsta) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 15 rebounds. The former international forward Mia Masic (180-1993) helped adding 19 points and 5 assists. Rijeka's coach used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was Bosnian swingman Sara Herceg (175-2001) with 24 points and American guard Jalia Arnwine (183-1999, agency: Dagger Basket) scored 13 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Rijeka maintains seventh place with 7-8 record. Zadar Plus lost their sixth game in a row. They dropped to the tenth position with 11 games lost. Rijeka will meet Split (#11) on the road in the next round. Zadar Plus will play against KAZL Split and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

There was a small surprise when tenth ranked KAZL Split (4-11) defeated at home 8th ranked Zadar (5-10) 70-58 on Saturday. KAZL Split dominated down low during the game scoring 44 of its points in the paint compared to Zadar's 18. KAZL Split forced 19 Zadar turnovers. It was a great evening for American guard Aliyah-Deen Ahmad (170-1998, college: FMU) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists. Her fellow American import guard Lauren Wasylson (183, college: Duquesne) helped adding 26 points and 6 rebounds. The best for the losing side was American Sam Deem (185-2001, college: Regis Univ.) with a double-double by scoring 18 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists and guard Lola Stipic (170-2008) scored 16 points. KAZL Split moved-up to ninth place. Loser Zadar keeps the eighth position with ten games lost. KAZL Split will meet Zadar Plus (#10) on the road in the next round. Zadar will play against Tresnjevka and hope to secure a win.

Rather expected game in Zagreb where 6th ranked Pozega (9-6) was rolled over by fourth ranked Tresnjevka (12-3) 81-54 on Sunday. Tresnjevka outrebounded Pozega 52-27 including a 19-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a great evening for Portuguese guard Rita Oliveira (165-2000) who led her team to a victory scoring 28 points and 6 rebounds. Hungarian power forward Sara Heljic (193-2000) helped adding 6 points, 15 rebounds and 6 assists. The best for the losing side was the former international forward Lea Miletic (184-1995) with 10 points and 7 rebounds and guard Ivana Mamic (162-2003) scored 15 points. Pozega's coach gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Tresnjevka moved-up to second place, which they share with Sibenik and Zagreb. Loser Pozega keeps the sixth position with six games lost. Tresnjevka will meet Zadar (#8) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Pozega will play against the league's second-placed Sibenik and hope to secure a win.
