KORISLIIGA: Pyrinto Finnish Champion! - May 8, 2010

Korisliiga, Finals, Game # 5: Pyrinto (Tampere) has won the very first Finnish Championship during the 43 years Team has played on top level in Finland. Pyrinto defeated today Torpan Pojat (Helsinki) 77-61 (40-32). Quarters: 25-14, 15-18, 14-14, 23-15. 5min 17-6, 10min 25-14, 15min 27-24, 20min 40-32, 25min 45-42, 30min 54-46, 35min 62-51 and 40min 77-61. Wins 3-2. Pyrinto's heroes were this time American players Damon Williams (201-F-73, college: Colorado St.-Pueblo) and Chris Hester (192-G/F-79, college: E.Washington). They combined 52 pts for the hosts. 36-year-old Williams wanted probably most this championship. Both for himself and for the Team. His 27 pts in the last contest of this 2009-10 season was game high - of course. Head Coach Pieti Poikola led last season this team to bronze medals. This season was the second one for Poikola coaching on top level and golden medals as the result. Not bad. ToPo's Head Coach Tomi Kaminen had won earlier three silver medals as a coach. This one is then silver # 4 for 'Silver Tomppa'.
Gold: Pyrinto (Tampere), Silver: Torpan Pojat (Helsinki), Bronze: Kouvot (Kouvola).

Honka - Pyrinto 101:83
Honka clinched the Finish Cup title. They overcame Pyrinto in the Final tonight. Honka snapped four-year winning streak of LrNMKY to take the trophy.
Corey Belser (200-F-82, college: San Diego) opened the game with a triple for the Playboys. Honka soon opened a 20:9 lead keeping their opponents at bay. Pyrinto however cut the distance as they trailed by just two points at the interval 25:27. Honka maintained the lead well throughout the second quarter. They were up by 10 points late in the half but Chris Hester (192-G/F-79, college: E.Washington) capped it with a three-pointer as Pyrinto trailed by 7 points twenty minutes into the encounter. Pyrinto got within 5 points midway through the third stanza however Ryan Bell and Carl Elliott (193-G-83, agency: SportsTalent, college: George Washington) reacted immediately boosting the margin back at 10-point mark. Honka entered the fourth frame up by 6 points 71:65. Corey Belser ensured a 78:68 advantage for the Playboys midway through the fourth stanza. Pyrinto failed to respond as Honka rallied to a comfortable win at the end.
