Korisliiga, Finals, Game # 5. Joensuu: Basketball season 2014-15 is over. The seventh time in the Finals was finally meaning Finnish Championship and first time Gold for Kataja. Kataja was holding the home court advantage to the end of this season, when defeating Bisons (Loimaa) 88-85 (44-49). Quarters: 24-30, 20-19, 21-22, 23-14. Finals series 3-2 for Kataja. Kataja had lost six times in the Finals, but won Silver that many times. Kataja had won also three times bronze in recent years. So Kataja was winning 10th time medals. But there were several persons, who can celebrate now the first Finnish Championship. G Petri Virtanen (183-PG-80) won his first Championship as well as PG Teemu Rannikko (189-PG-80), who played 13 years pro basketball in Europe. Head Coach Pekka Salminen visited first time as Kataja's coach 2009-10, but the second time was now direct hit. Salminen has won twice (2003, 2008) Swedish Championship as Solna Head Coach. And behind the team has been 14 years "eager beaver" GM Jukka Tormala, who has spent thousands and thousands of hours for building a winning roster. Now his dream came true. Actually the Team has given him an early birthday present. Mr Tormala's birthday will be on July 20 and this "birthday boy" will be then 60 yo!
Kataja had four players in double digits. Ken Horton (199-F-89, college: Cent.Conn.St.) led the hosts with 22 points. Playmaker Rannikko added 21pts and gave this time 12 assists! Tommi Huolila (198-PF-93) (20 p) was a lot better than NT Center Tuukka Kotti (205-PF-81, college: Providence) and Robert Arnold (198-F-88, college: Boise St.) (19pts/11rbs) had to sit on the bench the last 2.40 exiting minutes because of five personal fouls. Anthony Hilliard (193-G/F-86, college: Elizabeth City) led Bisons with game high 32 points (1 - 10/14, 2 - 2/8, 3 - 6/10). Ian Hummer (201-F-90, college: Princeton) scored 17pts and Martin Zeno (196-G-85, college: Texas Tech) as well 17pts. All Finnish players, among them three NT players, combined 13 points.
