Finals Game 4: brose Baskets Bamberg - Artland Dragons 64-63 (Bamberg Wins Series 3 games to 1) brose Baskets Bamberg captured the Bundesliga title Tuesday night at Artland Arena with a tight 64-63 victory over the underdog Artland Dragons. Head Coach Dirk Bauermann received outstanding contributions from roll players including veteran Robert Garrett and young talent Tim Ohlbrecht to close out the series. Garrett's shooting helped overcome subpar perimeter accuracy from Bamberg marksmen and Ohlbrecht provided excellent depth in the post for his team. Along with outstanding team defense, Bamberg's experience and an injury to Filberto Rivera played important factors in the result. At the tip, the Dragons came out breathing fire running to an impressive 1Q. Jumping on their guests, Artland earned a 20-12 lead after 1. However, the veteran Bamberg team turned the tide in Q2 as they answered with a strong run. Pulling back into the game, Bamberg cut into the lead and eventually trailed by only 1 33-32 at half. The 3Q was a defensive stalemate as both teams competed with tremendous intensity. Bamberg's slight edge in the third (14-8) gave Head Coach Dirk Bauermann and his team a 46-41 lead heading into the 4th and put Bamberg on the brink of the championship. Again, bench contributions were key for Bamberg as Tim Ohlbrecht (7pt 3reb) and Robert Garret gave their team a big boost. Artland C Darius Hall fouled out with just under 5min to play putting Artland behind the eight ball. Bamberg advanced their advantage over Artland to 58-51 with 4min to play. The Dragons comeback cut the lead to 63-56 wth 1:35 to play. A big Adam Hess basket narrowed the game to 64-61 forcing a Bamberg timeout with 1:01 remaining. Two clutch FT from closed the game to 64-63 but Bamberg held on in the intense final moments to capture their hard-earned championship! In the sealing Game 4 win, Robert Garret hit 3 of 4 threes to topscore with 16pt for Bamberg while K'zell Wesson sank 5 of 6 shots to add 10pt 9reb and Casey Jacobsen also reached double digits with 10pt. For Artland, Adam Hess led the attack with 21pt 7reb while Bryan Bailey contributed 15pt 5reb 5ast and PF Chad Prewitt sank 3 of 4 threes on his way to 13pt 7reb. The defensive oriented contest resulted in a tough night for shooters as both teams combined to sink only 10 of 48 three point attempts (Bamberg 4 for 22 18% and Artland 6 for 26 23%). Overall Bamberg hit 42% from the floor while holding Artland to 31% but the Dragons made up the difference with solid FT shooting hitting 21 of 25 (84%) compared to Bamberg's 14 of 23 (60%). Respect must be given to the Artland Dragons organization who rallied for a wonderful playoff run. Congratulations to Head Coach Chris Fleming, staff, players and fans for an exciting "Underdog Run" from 8th seed to the Championship Series in Artland. As with the entire season, the Dragons overcame tremendous adversity ranging from injuries and other challenges to deliver an outstanding post-season every Dragon can be proud of. Unfortunately, without injured PG Filberto Rivera, Artland was shorthanded when they needed it most but hats off to Bryan Bailey and his teammates who stepped up in Rivera's absence. Artland provided an excellent fight, but in the end, it was the team play and quality from Bamberg. Winning the Championship Series 3 games to 1, brose Baskets Bamberg clinched the 2006-2007 Bundesliga title and will likely earn a ticket into the outstanding Euroleague. Basketball fans remember Bamberg's fantastic performance in the Euroleague from 2005-2006 when Bauermann and his men enjoyed the most successful Euroleague performance in German basketball history. Congratulations to the entire brose Baskets Bamberg organization --- management, staff, coaches, players and fans --- for a well-deserved Bundesliga title!!!!!!!!!!! Koeln win the German Cup RheinEnergie Koeln did it again. By defeating the Artland Dragons in a thrilling final in Hamburg Head Coach Sasa Obradovic added another title to his personal collection after winning the German championship last year. It is the third time for REK to lift the BBL-Cup-trophy. Koeln were ahead 60:58 after 40 minutes, but had to fight hard to keep the Dragons down. Demond Mallet (186-G-78, agency: Higher Vision Sports, college: Mc Neese St.), who was named Man of the Match afterwards, scored 21 points in the final for Koeln, while Nik Caner-Medley (203-F-83, agency: Priority Sports, college: Maryland) had 13 for the Dragons. During the second half, that saw an increasing number of turnovers and missed opportunities, the troops of Coach Chris Fleming managed to turn things around and took the lead after being behind at halftime (31:38). Though Marcin Gortat (213-C-84) did everything he could to stop the Dragons from scoring in the paint by blocking 5 shots, the good all-round play helped the Dragons to stay in buisness. In the end nerves out of steel were needed, when the charity strip turned into the place to be. With about 11 seconds left to go in the final quarter Koeln were ahead with two, when Adam Hess (201-G/F-81, college: William & Mary) tried to hit the game-winning-shot from beyond the arch, but missed it. Prior to the final EnBW Ludwigsburg won the game for the third place against Eisbaeren Bremerhaven 82:74. Simply put Gordon Scott (195-G/F-76, college: Idaho) had a fantastic performance in this match-up, nailing 8 of his 12 shots from three-point-territory. The official attendance of 5575 on Sunday (5416 on Saturday) somehow was a negative factor of this TOP 4 which had been given to the city of Hamburg. The upper bowl of the beautiful Color-Line-Arena remained closed during the whole weekend and was covered with black tarpaulin, but still quite a lot empty seats could be seen even in the lower bowl. All in all the venue was far away from being sold-out. However especially the supporters from Bremerhaven and Quakenbrueck created a great atmosphere which fit to the mostly good-looking action on the hardwood perfectly.
