Mastrogiannopoulos and Anderson power Vikos Falcons to historic GBL promotion with Elite League Final Four triumph-May 3, 2026
Vikos Falcons made history on Sunday, becoming the first team from Ioannina — and the first from the Epirus region — to earn promotion to the Stoiximan Greek Basketball League (GBL), dismantling Evertech Papagou 87-72 in the Elite League Final Four championship game at the DAK Lefkadas. Sarandis Mastrogiannopoulos (194-PG-1997, agency: Octagon Europe) was the standout performer with 21 points, three rebounds, and eight assists in a commanding display, while Quincy Anderson (193-G-1999, college: Murray St.) matched him with 21 points and eight rebounds. The pair combined for 42 points as coach Thanasis Giaples's side took control early and never looked back. Papagou held a slim lead in the opening minutes, but the Falcons seized the advantage midway through the first quarter and never relinquished it. They closed the first period ahead 23-16 and maintained their cushion through a competitive second and third quarter. The decisive blow came in the fourth period, when Vikos Falcons opened up a lead of as many as 20 points, turning the final minutes into a celebration of a season-defining achievement. The Falcons had earned their place in the final with a dramatic 94-87 semifinal victory over Proteas Voulas on Friday. Michalis Kamperidis (206-F/C-1994) led that contest with 22 points, while Anderson added 18 and Sarandis Mastrogiannopoulos had 15 as the Ioannina side overcame a nerve-shredding third quarter in which Proteas pulled within a single point at 60-59 before the Falcons steadied in the fourth. Papagou had reached the final with a dominant semifinal victory over Megara ONEX BC (92-74). Vikos Falcons join regular-season champions Doxa Lefkadas VIKOS COLA as the two teams promoted to the GBL for 2026-27. The Falcons, who only entered the Elite League for the first time in 2024-25 and finished seventh in their debut season, completed a remarkable two-year ascent from newcomers to promoted champions. They finished the regular season at 20-8, then survived a dramatic playoff round against Lavrio Boderm — winning the decisive third game 78-77 — before sweeping through the Final Four in Lefkada. The club must now establish a professional entity (KAE), secure a venue meeting GBL standards — with the Arta arena a potential temporary home — and submit an operating budget of at least 800,000 euros to compete in Greece's top flight.
