Landstede Hammers Pull Away After the Break to Capture the DBL Crown-Jun 10, 2026
Landstede Hammers are champions of the Netherlands once again, overpowering Zorg en Zekerheid Leiden 90-74 at a raucous Landstede Sportcentrum to wrap up the Dutch Basketball League title.
For a half, Leiden hung tough. The visitors actually edged the second quarter to keep things close, trailing by just two at the interval after a high-scoring opening in which both sides shot better than 50 percent inside. But the Hammers seized control after the break, winning the third quarter 20-14 and then blowing the game open with a dominant 24-13 final period to turn a tight contest into a comfortable 16-point triumph.
Zwolle's balance was the difference. Devin Whitfield (196-G-1998, college: LMU) led the way with 20 points on efficient shooting, adding four rebounds and a team-best efficiency rating, while Jalen Thomas (208-F/C-2000, college: Butler, agency: CGL Agency) was a force inside with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Boyd Van Der Vuurst (193-PG-1999) chipped in 12 points and four assists, Erik Sajantila (195-F/G-2001, agency: Blacktop Management) came off the bench for 14, and Nelson Haskin (202-F-1999, college: Columbus St., agency: Olsta) filled the box score with 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. The Hammers shot a blistering 41.9 percent from three (13 of 31) and controlled the glass, 44-28, including an 11-4 edge on the offensive boards.
Leiden got 18 points from Sam Huurman (202-PF-2001) and a 17-point, 70-percent shooting night from veteran Roeland Schaftenaar (211-C/F-1988, college: Oregon St.) off the bench, with Dimitri Maconda (188-G-2001) adding 16. But they could not match Zwolle's outside shooting making just seven threes to the Hammers' 13 and their second-half offense dried up as the hosts pulled clear.
