The winner takes it all! KR champions of Iceland 2009 - Apr 14, 2009
KR are the champions in Iceland 2009 after they beat Grindavik 84-83 at home in game 5. It was for sure a game to top the great show that those finals have been this year. Sold out and amazing admosphere and the game was as good as they get. KR leading from first minute but though they got 15 points lead the Grindavik team came back and it was 50-44 at half time. Jakob Sigurdarson (192-G-82, college: Birmingham Souther) came very aggressive to the first half, scoring more than last 4 games and was shooting the ball great. Jon Stefansson (195-G-82) also playing very good game but Pall Kristinsson (202-F-76, college: USC Upstate) very solid for Grindavik with 10 points at half time.
In second half KR was in foul trouble, Helgi Magnusson (198-G/F-82, college: Catawba), Fannar Olafsson (203-C-78, college: Indiana, PA) and Jason Dourisseau (196-G-83, college: Nebraska) all had 4 fouls with 4 minutes left of 3rd quarter and Grindavik came closer and closer. Score after 3rd quarter was 68-66. Jason Dourisseau opened the 4th quarter with a 3 point basket at the shotclock buzzer and KR had the lead in 5 to 7 points until the last few minutes. Dourisseau fouled out with about 4 minutes left and after Helgi Magnusson gave KR a 7 point lead with a big 3, Nicky Bradford (200-G/F-78, college: Kansas) went to the other end and cut the lead back to 4 points. Grindavik then cut the lead to one point and one minute left when KR took a timeout. After a good setup Helgi Magnusson got wide open 3 but missed, got his own rebound and KR went back out. They did not score in that last possession and Grindavik went for the last one with 20 sec left of game time. With a few good options outside the Grindavik team tried to get to the basket but without getting that last possibly winning shot and deflection in KR defense gave them the ball with 2 sec left and they kept the ball and celelbrated their second Icelandic championship in last three years.
A dramatic ending where Grindavik was a shot from taking that championship in away game after KR had the lead since first minute. Great game from two great basketball teams and one point win in game 5 tells you everything on how fantastic those finals where this year.
Jon Stefansson from KR was chosen MVP for playoffs after the game, he had 23 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds tonight. Jakob Sigurdarson had 22 pts, 7 reb and 4 assists, Jason Dourisseau had 15 pts & 10 reb, Helgi Magnusson 7, Fannar Olafsson 7, Skarphedinn Ingason 4, Palmi Sigurgeirsson 3, Brynjar Bjrnsson 2, Darri Hilmarsson 1.
For Grindavik Nicky Bradford was outstanding as in all playoffs, specially in finals. He had 33 pts, 6 reb, 3 assists, Pall Kristinsson 13 pts (in 15 minutes), Brenton Birmingham 12 pts and 9 assists, Arnar Freyr Jnsson 9, Pall Axel Vilbergsson 6, Helgi Gudfinnsson 6, Thorleifur Olafsson 4.
Congratulations to KR on winning the championship for the second time in three years under coach Benedikt Gudmundsson , who anounced that he was quiting as coach of KR after this game.

Anything is possible; Stjarnan beat KR in Cup finals
Stjarnan won the Subway Cup today when they beat KR 78-76 in a dramatic game in Laugardalsholl.
KR had won 16 out of 17 league games, and the only loosing game came last monday against Grindavik. Stjarnan have been on a good run recently and are now 6th in the league (8-9). Not many people would have put their money on Stjarnan before the game but it was obvious that Stjarnan believed today as they showed from the start that they were going to give KR a hard time.
KR started well offensively and scored in first six possessions but Stjarnan were never far away and got the lead at the end of 1st quarter. They never gave that lead back and with solid defense and some big 3 point shots they managed to keep KR away and win the first trophy ever for Stjarnan in their first cup final game in history.
A great day for Stjarnan team and Teitur Orlygsson who took over as coach around christmas and has got a different & better look on the team.
Justin Shouse (180-G-81, college: Mercyhurst) & Jovan Zdravevski (197-F-80) had great game for Stjarnan. Shouse had 22 points & Zdravevski had 23 points and 11 rebounds. Also good performance from Kjartan Kjartansson, Gudjon Larusson and captain Fannar Helgason.
Jon Stefansson (195-G-82) had 29 points for KR and Jakob Sigurdarson (192-G-82, college: Birmingham Souther) had 15. KR team never got in rythm and struggled offensively. Many key players far away from their standard at this time and defensively they struggled against Shouse & Zdravevski.
It will be interesting to see how the KR team will respond to this huge disapointment, and next game for them is at home against Cup winners Stjarnan on thursday night.
