Taranto defends championship title in Italy - May 17, 2010

Taranto - Familia Schio 64-52

Taranto defended championship title in Italy! They had to work very hard in order to do this as Familia Schio demonstrated great performance in the Finals. However, Taranto managed to beat them in crucial Game Five and to win the second straight title. Megan Mahoney (183-F-83, agency: LBM Management, college: Kansas St.) shined last night with 21 points and 11 personal fouls were made on her. Kathy Wambe (173-G-81) helped with 12 points in this victory and she was the last one with double-digits in scoring. On the other side, Audrey Sauret Gillespie (179-G/F-76) netted 13 points and was the leading player in Schio. Nicole Antibe (187-C/F-74) and Iciss Tillis (194-F-81, college: Duke) (5 rebs) delivered 10 points each. First and second quarter were the crucial ones in this game. After ten minutes of play, the home side already had 19-12 lead. Nothing has changed in the next period as Taranto scored 19 points once again, while Schio was stopped to just 10. It means that the hosts had comfortable 38-22 at the half time and were on the tight track to victory. Schio improved after the breather, but Taranto players were strong enough to respond and to keep comfortable lead until the end. As a reminder, Taranto was the regular season champion in Serie A1 with almost perfect 21-1 record. After that, Taranto eliminated Umbertide (QFinals, 2-0) and Umana Reyer (Semis, 3-0), both with perfect scores.

Schio wins the Italian Cup - Mar 8, 2010

In a sold-out Taliercio Arena in Venezia, Schio gained the first title of the season. In the semis, Schio had beaten Faenza by 1 (62-61: Moises Pinto 17, Erkic 17; Macchi 17, Tillis 15, Pastore 10), and Venezia the hi-ranked Taranto 71-67 (Mahoney 20, Greco 17; Ballardini 14, Sottana 14; Nadalin 11, Kostaki 11).
The final game was amazing. Schio dominated the first half (39-26), but Venezia stormed back after the break outscoring the opponents 25-7 in the third period to lead 51-46. The home team lead still by 9 (62-53) with 100 seconds to play, but Schio founded an impressive Laura Macchi (187-F-79) (finals mvp) scoring consecutive baskets to even the game (65-65); always Macchi went 1/2 from the free throw line, putting Schio ahead for good (66-65) because Venezia missed the last shot when the clock expired.
By this win, Schio gained a spot in next women Euroleague.

Cras Taranto clinch SuperCup title - Oct 4, 2009

Cras Taranto - Faenza 65:62

Cras Taranto celebrated the second SuperCup triumph in the teams history. Taranto held off Faenza to clinch the title. The Seria A defending champions entered the game without Zimerle and Wambe but it did not prevent the team from taking a strong start. Taranto ran away to a 20:11 lead midway through the first frame. Taranto arrived at the first break ahead by 7 points 26:19. Faenza unleashed a 7:1 run at the start of the second period to cut the deficit. But Taranto did not allow their opponents to put their noses in front. The reigning champions rolled to a 37:31 advantage at halftime. Taranto stretched the gap to 11 points early in the third frame. The margin reached a 13-point mark but Faenza did not say die. They fired seven points in a row to stay within striking distance. The teams kept it close in the fourth period. Taranto led by just three points with 36 seconds to go. But Brunson hit decisive points and sealed the winning outcome for Taranto at the end.
Michelle Greco (176-G-80) and Elodie Godin (190-C-85) had 16 points each for Taranto. Michelle Greco was named the MVP of the game. Jami Montagnino (173-G-85, college: Tulane) delivered 13 points in the winning effort. Geraldine Robert (184-F-80) answered with 19 points and 12 boards for Faenza. Oleksandra Prystupa (205-C-89, agency: LBM Management) had 11 points in the losing case.
