USA outscored Japan to keep the perfect record at the Olympic Games. The hosts tried hard in the majority of the game, however fell 69-86. Both teams showed outstanding performance in the first period as Japan took a narrow 30-28 lead. USA, however slowed them down with a 21-10 surge to take a 49-40 halftime advantage. USA added two more victories in the second half for the final success at the Saitama Super Arena.
A'Ja Wilson (196-F-96, college: S.Carolina) top-scored for the winners with 20 points and 10 rebounds, whilst Brittney Griner (203-C-90, college: Baylor, agency: Wasserman) and Breanna Stewart (193-F-94, college: UConn, agency: Wasserman) netted 15 each. Diana Taurasi (182-PG-82, college: UConn, agency: Wasserman) followed them with 11 points in a win. Maki Takada (183-C-89) answered with 15 points in a loss and Saki Hayashi (173-G-95) scored 12.
