Spain overcame China 90-89 in overtime tipping off the Paris 2024 Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament. China started better and led 9 points at the end of the first quarter. Spain needed a strong second period and then fourth quarter to catch up with the opponents. Leonor Rodriguez-Manso (180-G-1991, college: FSU) tied it all at 76:76 and had a chance to bring the victory for Spain, however missed a free throw. In overtime Li Meng (185-F-1995) made two free throws for a 78-78, whilst Maria Araujo (188-PF-1997) scored a three for a 3-point lead. Megan Gustafson (193-C-1996, college: Iowa) drove a lay-up for an 85-82 and then 87-84. Queralt Casas (177-G/F-1992) scored two free throws for a 5-point advantage with less than a minute to go. Li Yueru (201-C-1999) replied with a three for an 89-87 and she later made a layup for a final 90-89. Megan Gustafson top-scored for the winners with 29 points and Leonor Rodriguez-Manso notched 25. Li Yueru replied with massive 31 points and 15 rebounds in a loss, whilst Li Meng posted 13. |
