OBL Round 30 (Regular Season): King lose to Legia

The Regular Season in OBL just ended. Here is the last round review presented by Job Market.

Round 30 most important game was a defeat of league's leader Wilki Morskie (21-9). They were defeated by second ranked Legia (22-8) 88-84 on Wednesday night. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Wilki Morskie. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The former international Michal Kolenda (202-1997) had a double-double by scoring 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and international Andrzej Pluta (190-2000) chipped in 16 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists during the contest. Legia's coach Heiko Rannula used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. The best for the losing side was Serbian forward Nemanja Popovic (205-2001) with 27 points and 9 rebounds. Legia have an impressive seven-game winning streak. Defending champion keeps a position of league leader. King at the other side dropped to the second place with nine games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Legia.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Trefl (19-11) against seventh ranked Anwil (17-13) on Wednesday night. Visiting Trefl was defeated by Anwil in Wloclawek 94-79. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Trefl. Icelandic point guard Elvar Fridriksson (182-1994, college: Barry) notched 11 points and 6 assists to lead the effort and Tyler Wahl supported him with 11 points. Even 19 points and 4 assists by American guard Grant Sherfield (188-1999, college: Oklahoma, agency: Octagon Europe) did not help to save the game for Trefl. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Anwil maintains seventh position with 17-13 record. Trefl at the other side dropped to the fourth place with 11 games lost.
Dziki (#5) was upset in Zielona Gora by eighth ranked Zastal 105-86. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Dziki. The best player for the winners was Conley Garrison who scored 9 points, 9 rebounds and 13 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was Landrius Horton who recorded 18 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Zastal maintains eighth position with 16-14 record, which they share with Stal and MKS. Defending champion Dziki keeps the fifth place with 12 games lost. They share the position with Arka.

There were no shocking results in the other games in round 30: GTK won against Czarni on the opponent's court 89-80. MKS managed to outperform Start in a home game 105-100. Slask rolled over Krosno on the road 88-66. Stal defeated Gornik on its own court 86-74. Arka was beaten by Arriva P.Cukier in Torun 95-86.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 20 points and 8 rebounds by Phil Fayne II of Zastal.




Anwil - Trefl 94-79

Very important is a road loss of third ranked Trefl (19-11) against seventh ranked Anwil (17-13) on Wednesday night. Visiting Trefl was defeated by Anwil in Wloclawek 94-79. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Trefl. Czarni - GTK 80-89

We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams in Slupsk where 14th ranked Czarni (9-21) was defeated by fifteenth ranked GTK (7-23) 89-80 on Wednesday. GTK made 16-of-21 free shots (76.2 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was Cape Verdean-Portuguese Ivan Almeida (197-1989, college: Stonehill) who scored 28 points and 9 rebounds. American guard KJ Jackson (187-1998, college: UMBC) chipped in 26 points and 6 rebounds. Four GTK players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was power forward Szymon Tomczak (201-1998, agency: SPORTFORUM Agency) who recorded 16 points and 7 rebounds and American guard Chico Carter Jr (190-2000, college: DePaul) added 17 points and 4 assists respectively. Czarni's coach Ivica Skelin rotated twelve players in this game, but that didn't help. GTK maintains fifteenth position with 7-23 record. Loser Czarni keeps the fourteenth place with 21 games lost.

MKS DG - Start 105-100

Rather predictable result in Dabrowa Gornicza where ninth ranked MKS (16-14) defeated 13th ranked Start (10-20) 105-100 on Wednesday. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. MKS dominated down low during the game scoring 78 of its points in the paint compared to Start's 44. They outrebounded Start 45-34 including a 16-2 advantage in offensive rebounds. MKS looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was American power forward EJ Montgomery (208-1999, college: Kentucky) who scored 26 points and 6 rebounds (on 11-of-12 shooting from the field). The other American import guard Luther Muhammad (191-1999, college: Arizona St.) chipped in 21 points and 8 assists. MKS's coach Artur Gronek allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. At the other side the best for losing team was American forward Quincy Ford (203-1993, college: Northeastern) who recorded a double-double by scoring 26 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists and Georgian-American point guard Conner Frankamp (185-1995, college: Wichita St., agency: Octagon Europe) added 22 points (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) respectively. Five MKS and four Start players scored in double figures. MKS moved-up to eighth place, which they share with Zastal and Stal. Loser Start keeps the thirteenth position with 20 games lost.

Not a big story in a game in Krosno where 16th ranked Miasto Szkla (4-26) was rolled over by fourth ranked WKS Slask (20-10) 88-66 on Wednesday. Slask looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. The best player for the winners was the former international forward Jakub Niziol (201-1996, college: Cal Poly) who scored 19 points and 9 assists. Bosnian Ajdin Penava (206-1997, college: Marshall) chipped in 11 points and 8 rebounds. Four WKS Slask players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was Croatian power forward Ivica Radic (208-1990) who recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points and 13 rebounds and Estonian guard Leemet Bockler (200-2001, college: SMC) added 14 points respectively. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Slask moved-up to third place. Krosno lost seventh consecutive game. They stay dead last with 26 lost games.

Everything could happen in Ostrow Wielkopolski at the game between two tied teams. Both eleventh ranked Stal and 10th ranked Gornik had identical 15-14 record. This time Stal used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Walbrzych 86-74 on Wednesday night. Stal made 21-of-25 free shots (84.0 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was Latvian power forward Mareks Mejeris (207-1991) who had a double-double by scoring 16 points and 13 rebounds. American guard Trenton Gibson (193-2000, college: Indiana St.) chipped in 17 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Five Stal players scored in double figures.
