Nitra clinch Extraliga title - May 16, 2009 Pezinok - Nitra 93:97 Nitra became the new Extraliga champions. They defeated Pezinok in the fifth decisive game of the finals. Pezinok surged ahead early in the game. Kozlik and Snopko connected from beyond the arc to give the hosts a 10:4 lead. However Eugene Lawrence (185-G-86, college: St.John's) responded with his own triple as Nitra went on a 9:1 run to grab the lead. Fapso fired from downtown and Dametri Hill (203-C-74, college: Florida) added two free throws as the visitors enjoyed a 20:15 advantage at the first intermission. Andrej Lukjanec (203-F/C-69) and Micuda quickly denied the deficit at the start of the second frame and the teams traded baskets throughout the period. Andrej Lukjanec accounted for 3 points late in the first half as Pezinok claimed a 43:41 lead into the major break. Andrej Lukjanec scored 5 straight points midway through the third frame as Pezinok stretched the margin to 6 points. Soon Lorenzo Williams (191-G-84, college: Rice) and Andrej Lukjanec ensured a 10-point advantage for the hosts. Fapso, Dametri Hill and Andrej Cervenka (198-G/F-84) kept Nitra in the contest as they narrowed the deficit to a single point with ten minutes to go. Eugene Lawrence and Fapso hit 5 points in a row as Nitra piled up a 72:66 lead early in the fourth term. Eugene Lawrence and Pohanka continued Nitras onslaught as the visiting team earned a 9-point cushion. Lorenzo Williams and Andrej Lukjanec struck back with 6 points in a row as Pezinok clipped the gap. But Nitra stayed calm as Tomek and Eugene Lawrence restored a 7-point buffer for Nitra with less than 2 minutes to go. Dametri Hill knocked down 5 free throws in the dying seconds as Nitra succeeded in keeping Pezinok at bay. Eugene Lawrence tallied 26 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists to pace Nitra to the triumph. Branislav Tomek (205-C-83) contributed 18 points and 11 boards for the winners. Andrej Lukjanec could not rescue Pezinok with game-high 34 points. Kevin Houston (193-G/F-76, college: St.Bonaventure) came up with 22 points in the loss.
