Caja Laboral wins the ACB title in thriller - Jun 16, 2010

Caja Laboral - Regal Barca 79-78 OT

Caja Laboral won the ACB title for season 2009/10! The team from Vitoria managed to beat powerful Regal Barca in three consecutive games and to win the title with perfect 3-0 in the Finals. Lior Eliyahu (207-F-85, agency: ZAG Advocates) stepped up for the hosts in Game 3 with 18 points. Tiago Splitter (211-C/F-85, agency: Interperformances) had double-double of 14 points and 13 boards. He was the MVP of this meeting with valuation 36. In Regal Barca, Juan Carlos Navarro (192-G-80) delivered 18 pts. Pete Mickeal (199-F-78, college: Cincinnati) and Ricky Rubio (192-G-90) (8 rebs) netted 16 and 14 points respectively. Caja Laboral opened the game better and they made 22-18 lead in the first quarter. Barca slightly improved after that, but still the hosts were in control and they jumped to 41-36 at the HT. Third period totally belonged to Barca, who intensified defense and stopped Caja Laboral players to just 11 pts for 10 minutes. On the other side, visitors drained 17 for one-point lead before the last quarter. In the finish of Q4, Caja Laboral jumped to 66-61 thanks to corner triple by Pau Ribas. At that time it seemed that Barca will not have enough power to respond, but Juan Carlos Navarro drained a triple and Morris made a dunk for 66-66 tie. Caja Laboral had the last possession, but Eliyahu shot was rejected by Morris and the game went to overtime. It was a tough decision about this shot, was it in goaltending or not, but the referees decided it wasn't (!?). Ricky Rubio shined in overtime leading his team to 75-70 lead. However, Caja Laboral players didn't give up and they managed to reply with mini 3-6 run. Caja Laboral was down by two, but they had the last possession. Fernando San Emeterio (198-G/F-84) grabbed the ball, penetrated inside and made a layup, including a personal foul by Morris. There was 0.5 second left and Fernando San Emeterio had destiny in his hand. One single free throw for the title and he made it! Barca tried from the half court and that shot was close to get it. However, it didn't and Caja Laboral started with big celebration!

Spanish Kings Cup: Barcelona rolls over Real Madrid to clinch the Cup title - Copa Del Rey - Feb 21, 2010

Barcelona had an unexpectedly pleasant afternoon against Real Madrid in the Spanish Kings cup final, trashing the whites 80-61 to claim the title in front of a full-packed 15000-seat Bilbao Exhibition Centre. Barcelona found no opponent in Messina's team, knocked-out even before halftime (50-35) due to an outstanding team effort by the current ACB leader. Real got an early 5-8 edge behind the points of Garbajosa and Jaric, but Barcelona needed less than a pair of threes by Basile to react and get ahead for the first time in the game. Fran Vazquez (210-C-83), named MVP of the final by the media, awoke Barcelona later and led his team to a 10-0 run in the second quarter to get the first significant advantages to his team. Once that happened, and although Real tried hard after the intermission, Barcelona never looked back and kept increasing the margin to a game-high of 27 points, 64-37, at the end of the third period. Fran Vazque led Barcelona scorers with 14 points in 18 minutes, while Velickovic and Lavrinovic had 11 each for the losers.

Marko Jaric and Jorge Garbajosa combined with four points each for an early 5-8 lead, while Barcelona was unable to find the go-to player on its offense. Real defense stopped Barcelona's backcourt, but couldn't make a larger margin because of the lack of accuracy on its shooting. Rubio found Vazquez for a monster dunk to give Barcelona its first lead, 9-8, after 5 minutes, followed by back-to-back triples by Basile that confirmed Barcelona was ready for the challenge. Jaric, from downtown, and Llull, with a pair of free throws, aborted Barcelona's attempt to break the game, as a free throw exchange closed the first period with a short 3-point lead for Barcelona, 19-16.

The whites struggled in the beginning of the second quarter, committing 3 turnovers in a row against a very well adjusted defense. Barcelona didnt take advantage of that to build a safer margin, as Lavrinovic found an open three to reduce differences to 21-19 after 13 minutes. The joy didnt last for long on white's side, as Mickeal, Vazquez and Lorbek fueled a 8-0 run to make it a 10-point game, 29-19, with less than 4 minutes to go to halftime. Real Madrid offensive drought became a major issue for Messina, unable to find the appropriate lineup. Morris, with a lucky three pointer and a spectacular tip-in, extended the margin to 15 points, 38-23, entering the last minute of the quarter, which finished with Barcelona leading 50-25.

The break didnt change the trend after the intermission, as Navarro and Mickeal took over for Barcelona to make the hole even deeper. A three pointer by La bomba and 3 more points by Mickeal set a 24-point edge for the Catalonians, a difference that remained steady for the most part of the third period. Velickovic and Llull tried to awake their team from behind the arc, but it was too late against Catalonian festival. Grimau, with back-to-back layups, increased the difference even more, 64-37 at the end of the third period.

With the outcome in no doubt, Barcelona didnt need much to keep a safe 20-ppoint lead, as the fans were already celebrating the win at the stands. Both teams did their best to keep the intensity, but the last minutes looked like an exhibition game, as Pascual decided to rotate its bench players, using the twelve he got for the game. Lavrinovic had 4 straight points in the last minute to avoid a more painful loss, as Barcelona team captain, Roger Grimau, headed the stands to take and raise the Cup trophy

Navarro MVP As Barcelona Lift ACB SuperCopa - Oct 3, 2009

Regal Barcelona won the first El Classico of 2009/10 as Juan Navarro (192-G-80) added to a great few weeks following up his Eurobasket winners medal by leading his club to an 86-82 win over Real Madrid in the ACB Supercup.

Navarro finished with 22 points including five triples to go with his 5 assists as Barca turned the game with a strong final quarter. The Catalans had enjoyed success in the first half until shortly before the break when Real took the upper hand at 49-46 going into the interval. Coach Ettore Messina and his players then extended that advantage to five points heading into the final ten minutes but Barca held their arch rivals to just 11 points to take the victory and bragging rights.

Both teams showcased their new acquisitions with Slovenian Erazem Lorbek (210-F/C-84, college: Michigan St.) pick for the winners with a typical 12 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks. For Real, they will be disappointed they lost a game they looked like taking and in a tight game, there was only really Jorge Garbajosa (205-C/F-77, agency: Interperformances) who made an above average contribution with 17 points. Messina needed one of his other big names to produce a match winning performance but it just didnt happen.

One thing is for sure, there are some monumental battles ahead this season between these two clubs while both certainly look well equipped for a tilt at Euroleague.
