All-Imports Team London Lions win WBBL Play-off Final in front of record crowd - May 15, 2022 London Lions ended the season in spectacular style by lifting the WBBL play-off trophy with a 70-45 win over Sevenoaks Suns at London's 02 Arena. The Lions completed the domestic quadruple in front of a Women's British Basketball League record crowd of 10,928 with an incredible atmosphere in the arena as the fans witnessed an exhilarating finale. The showpiece event was as also enjoyed by many more watching live on Sky Sports. Kennedy Leonard (173-G-1996, college: Colorado, agency: LBM Management) was named MVP after she put in an exceptional display on the big stage. The Lions star led her side with a dominant display out on the court, scoring 13 points, making seven assists and contributing five assists in a superb showing. The Suns came flying out of the blocks in the opening quarter of the match and after both sides traded early baskets, they gained the early ascendency with a five-point lead after the opening ten minutes. But the Lions roared back in the second quarter immediately overturning the deficit and edging clear of the opponents with an 11-point lead midway through the quarter. But Sevenoaks fought back to make it a five-point game as the sides headed in for the half time break in what was a enthralling opening 20 minutes of action. Shanice Beckford-Norton (173-G-1997, college: LSU) and Frankie Wurtz (173-G-1996, college: Green Bay) were the stars of the show in the first half, leading the scoring for their teams, respectively. It would be Beckford-Norton who would be the happier of the two in the third quarter as her side dominated the opening exchanges further increasing their lead. The Lions began to show their quality at both ends of the court and defensively in particular they really highlighted why they have been the team to beat in the WBBL this season. However, the Suns would not give in and a gritty display towards the end of the quarter ensured they stayed in touch to give themselves hope as the game entered the crucial final quarter. The Lions ensured they completed the quadruple with a professional and assured final quarter performance. Their relentless pressure told as their domination began to reflect on the score line, with the Suns opportunities to work their way back into the match severely restricted by the Lions strong defensive qualities. There was no doubting that the 10,928 inside The 02 Arena were treated to an entertaining spectacle as the WBBL season came to a close in historic fashion. Courtesy of: wbbl.org.uk London Lions win WBBL Cup, eye sweep - Jan 30, 2022 London Lions lived up to their own hype by streamrollering Newcastle Eagles in the 2022 WBBL Cup final. Victors by 87-47, largely untested following an 11-0 surge early in the first quarter at ArenaBirmingham that set the tone, Mark Clark's side simply had too much talent for an Eagles team which has had to rebuild in recent weeks under a new coach and additional urgent recruits. Now for the domestic quadruple, the capital outfit signalled. Nothing less will really suffice, given their depth. 'I'm really pleased to get the win,' said Clark. 'It's a nice way to end the first half of the season. I think Newcastle did an excellent job and they did really well to reach the final. We're really pleased to win the game. 'We've never won the WBBL Cup before so it's really nice to pick up some silverware and the group really do deserve it. The crowd mean everything to us, it's so important for the game.' It was a tough debut for Eagles new coach Noelia Cacheiro with Eagles trailing 39-18 at the half with Lions converting 8 of their 15 three-pointers before the break. Every punch Newcastle threw, a one-two came back in response, inside and out. The advantage grew, until the gap was so great in the fourth that benches were thrown in for good measure. London, fearless, exact and triumphant - and perhaps only getting started - with the MVP of the final, Azania Stewart (196-C-89, college: Florida), a perfect 9-9 from the field for 20 points and her Great Britain team-mate Johannah Leedham-Warner (180-SF-87, college: FPU) picking up her first trophy in the UK, and as a mother, with 11 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals. After reaching the Last 32 of the EuroCup, now they have a tangible prize. 'We've been working so hard from the beginning of this season,' said Stewart. 'We're just trying to put our level from Europe into the English (sic) league.' Newcastle, paced by 16 points from Maddie McVicar, shot 38% from field goal range but were forced into 31 turnovers. Courtesy of: mvp247.com Lions crowned WBBL Trophy Champions - Mar 20, 2022 London Lions have won the 2022 WBBL Trophy for a second consecutive year after they beat Sevenoaks Suns 72-36 in the Betty Codona WBBL Trophy Final. The game got off to a close start with both sides exchanging baskets. Lions, however, were able to open up an eight-point lead after a fantastic opening quarter from Holly Winterburn (178-G-2000, college: UC Davis). The guard scored 11 points in the quarter as Lions led 16-8. The second quarter saw a flurry of unforced errors from Sevenoaks Suns. Lions weren't able to capitalise fully on their opponent's mistakes, but they won the quarter 17-15 to hold a 10 point, 33-23 lead at the halftime break. Lions started to assert their dominance in the third quarter. They limited Suns to just six points in the period whilst adding 23 to their own total to take control of the game and go into the fourth and final quarter 56-29 ahead. Lions played out the game comfortably in the last. They won the quarter 16-7 to wrap up a 72-36 win and secure their second consecutive WBBL Trophy title. Holly Winterburn took home the MVP award after a superb performance of 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. MVP Winterburn said: 'I think I just tried to make the right decision at every moment and that can be scoring, assisting, stealing and we all do that. We really pride ourselves on letting the game come to us and making the right decisions. 'We just make each other better and respect each other. It doesn't matter who scores, we're just a team and want to get the win.' Winning Head Coach, Mark Clark was happy with his side's performance. He said: 'We've just kept a great team to 36 points. We talked all week about defence. We have talked since Europe that our defence has to be at a different level and it's getting better every week' Speaking about MVP Holly Winterburn, he said: 'Holly Winterburn is a basketball player. I don't think you've seen her best yet. All I can say is she can get to the levels of Johannah Leedham-Warner (180-SF-1987, college: FPU)' Courtesy of: wbbl.org.uk |
