Round 26 (Regular Season): Liepaja/LSSS beat BJBS Riga in a derby game

The Regular Season in WBBL is slowly approaching the end. But there may be still some important changes in the final standings in the last 3 rounds. Here is the last round review presented by LBM Management.

The most interesting game of round 26 was a derby match between two teams from Latvia. Sixth ranked Liepaja/LSSS outleveled visiting BJBS Riga (2-15) 79-23. Liepaja/LSSS held BJBS Riga to an opponent 17.4 percent shooting from the field compared to 37.2 percent accuracy of the winners. Liepaja/LSSS forced 30 BJBS Riga turnovers and outrebounded them 50-24 including a 20-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was guard Sabine Lipe (175-1999, college: UTEP) who scored 20 points and 7 rebounds. Latvian guard Raivita Korenika (181-2001) chipped in 6 points and 12 rebounds. Forward Franciska Treiliha (177-2004) produced 8 points and 5 rebounds for the guests. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Liepaja/LSSS have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain sixth position with 12-9 record. BJBS Riga lost third consecutive game. They keep the eleventh place with 15 games lost. Liepaja/LSSS are looking forward to face Aistes-LSMU (#7) in Kaunas in the next round. BJBS Riga will play at home against Daugavpils (#10) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Swingman Anita Mikelsone (178-2001) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 14 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 blocks. Luize Septe contributed with 16 points, 11 rebounds, 9 assists and 6 blocks for the winners. Estonian forward Annija Brence (179-2006) replied with 6 points for TTT Juniores. TTT Juniores' coach gave up on the game allowing to play twelve players seeing no chance for a win. RSU maintains eighth position with 10-9 record. TTT Juniores at the other side still closes the standings. RSU will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. TTT Juniores will play at home against Panevezys (#9) and hope to get finally their first victory.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Lithuanian Siauliai (15-6) against sixth ranked Latvian Liepaja/LSSS (12-9) on Saturday night. Visiting Siauliai was defeated by Liepaja/LSSS in a tough game in Liepaja 82-88. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Siauliai. Sabine Lipe scored 23 points and 8 rebounds (perfect from downtown making all five shots) to lead the charge for the winners. Cassidy Mihalko responded with 29 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Liepaja/LSSS have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain sixth position with 12-9 record. Loser Siauliai keeps the third place with six games lost. Liepaja/LSSS will meet at home Aistes-LSMU (#7) in the next round. Siauliai will have a break next round.

In the last two games of round 26 Aistes-LSMU defeated BJBS Riga in Kaunas 72-68. Daugavpils beat Panevezys at home 78-72.

BJBS Riga - Aistes-LSMU 68-72

There was no surprise when 11th ranked Latvian BJBS Riga (2-15) was defeated at home by seventh ranked Lithuanian Aistes-LSMU (11-9) 72-68 on Thursday. Aistes-LSMU made 25-of-29 free shots (86.2 percent) during the game. Karolina Kazociunaite (180-1999) scored 17 points to lead the charge for the winners and Gintare Paulauskaite (185-1995) chipped in 10 points and 9 rebounds (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line) during the contest. Liva Hermane responded with 24 points and 5 steals and forward Sarlote Petersone (173-2003) scored 14 points and 7 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Aistes-LSMU maintains seventh position with 11-9 record. BJBS Riga lost third consecutive game. They keep the eleventh place with 15 games lost. Aistes-LSMU will meet higher ranked Liepaja/LSSS (#6) on the road in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. BJBS Riga will play against Daugavpils (#10) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Daugavpils - Panevezys 78-72

We could consider it a predictable result in the game between close teams when tenth ranked Latvian Daugavpils (4-12) defeated at home 9th ranked Lithuanian Panevezys (5-14) 78-72 on Saturday. Daugavpils forced 23 Panevezys turnovers. Strangely Panevezys outrebounded Daugavpils 50-30 including a 17-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. Polish point guard Kinga Piedel (170-1997) scored 22 points and 5 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and guard Katrina Millere (174-2005) chipped in 18 points, 5 assists and 4 steals during the contest. Guard Kriste Timofejeva (180-1992) responded with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists and power forward Agnese Garcinskaite (182-2002) produced a double-double by scoring 12 points and 15 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Daugavpils maintains tenth position with 4-12 record. Panevezys lost eighth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keep the ninth place with 14 games lost. Daugavpils will meet BJBS Riga (#11) on the road in the next round. Panevezys will play against TTT Juniores in Riga and hope to secure a win.

Very important is a road loss of third ranked Lithuanian Siauliai (15-6) against sixth ranked Latvian Liepaja/LSSS (12-9) on Saturday night. Visiting Siauliai was defeated by Liepaja/LSSS in a tough game in Liepaja 82-88. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Siauliai. Liepaja/LSSS made 16-of-19 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game. Guard Sabine Lipe (175-1999, college: UTEP) scored 23 points and 8 rebounds (perfect from downtown making all five shots) to lead the charge for the winners and Latvian guard Raivita Korenika (181-2001) chipped in 21 points and 7 rebounds during the contest. RSU players were unselfish on offense dishing 31 assists comparing to just 10 passes made by TTT Juniores' players. They brought some defensive toughness making 11 blocks.
