Regular Season Round 8: Manresa - Gijon 61-70

There was an upset when higher ranked Manresa (3-5) was defeated at home by twelfth ranked Gijon (2-6) 70-61 on Sunday. The best player for the winners was Canadian guard Merissah Russell (183-2002, college: Louisville) who scored 29 points and 7 rebounds. Center Sofia Hamidi (185-2005) chipped in 9 points and 10 rebounds. produced 15 points and added 12 points and 6 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Manresa's coach let to play eleven players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Gijon moved-up to eleventh place. Loser Manresa dropped to the ninth position with five games lost. They share it with Boet Mataro and Plasencia. Gijon will meet at home higher ranked Barakaldo (#7) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Manresa will play against the league's second-placed GDKO Bizkaia and will have a slim chance for a victory.
