Regular Season Round 22: Apoel - Apollon 103-102

The most exciting game of round 22 in the OPAP Basket League took place in Nicosia. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of one of their biggest challengers Apollon (12-8) to third ranked Apoel (15-5) 103-102 in the game for the third place. The hosts trailed by 3 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 2-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 103-102. Apoel made 32-of-38 free shots (84.2 percent) during the game, while Apollon only scored sixteen points from the stripe. Apoel looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. 24 personal fouls committed by Apollon helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American guard Carlbe Ervin II (190-1995, college: Kansas St.) scored 22 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists to lead the charge for the winners and the other American import forward Travin Thibodeaux (203-1996, college: New Orleans) chipped in 17 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists during the contest. Ervin II is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Five Apoel players scored in double figures. Apoel's coach Slobodan Subotic used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. At the losing side Ghanian-American guard Milan Acquaah (190-1997, college: CBU) responded with 36 points (!!!), 7 assists and 4 steals and American center Taylor Adway (205-1996, college: Ferris St.) produced a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds. Apoel maintains third position with 15-5 record having four points less than leader Keravnos. Apollon at the other side keeps the fourth place with eight games lost.
