Hollingsworth's 28-point eruption seals back-to-back crown for Petrolina AEK-May 25, 2026
Petrolina AEK successfully defended their ECOMMBX Basket League championship on Monday, holding off a furious late rally from Keravnos Strovolou to win 68-64 in Game 5 of the finals at the Kition Arena and claim the title 3-2 in front of approximately 4,000 fans. Taveion Hollingsworth (188-G-1999, college: WKU) was the driving force with a game-high 28 points, including a clutch fourth-quarter performance that kept AEK ahead when Keravnos closed within a single point in the dying seconds. Jayveous McKinnis (201-F-1999, college: Ole Miss) added 16 points and Ta'Lon Cooper (193-G-1999, college: S.Carolina) had 12, including the composed free throws and a Reed Nottage (198-G, college: CBU) dunk in the closing seconds that sealed the championship for coach Christoforos Liavadiotis' side. The opening half was a stalemate. Both quarters ended level 18-18 after the first and 34-34 at halftime with the teams matching each other shot for shot in front of an electric Larnaca crowd. The third quarter changed everything. AEK's defensive intensity ramped up, and with Hollingsworth and Jayveous McKinnis leading the charge, the hosts opened up a 10-point cushion at 55-45 entering the final period. Keravnos refused to fold. Coach Vasilis Kounas' side mounted a determined fightback in the fourth quarter, with Jeffrey Jeffrey Crockett (201-F-1991, college: Texas Tech) and Nikolaos Stylianou (198-F-1988, college: WTAM) hitting big shots from beyond the arc to close the gap to a single point at 65-64 in the closing seconds. But Ta'Lon Cooper's composure from the free-throw line and Reed Nottage's exclamation-point dunk shut the door on any chance of an overtime period. For Keravnos, Jeffrey Crockett led with 19 points, while Brandon Huntley-Hatfield (206-C-2003, college: NC State) added 12 points and six rebounds. F Tigas had nine, Mihail and Nikolaos Stylianou six each, but the visitors could not generate enough offense across the third quarter when AEK seized control. The title is AEK's second consecutive crown confirming the Larnaca club's status as the dominant force in Cypriot basketball. Eurobasket.com All-Cypriot ECOMMBX BL Awards 2026-May 27, 2026
