Everything went according to plan when third ranked Banvit (11-2) defeated 12th ranked Aliaga (4-9) in Balikesir 96-91 on Sunday. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Aliaga trailed by 12 points after 3 quarters before a 27-20 run in the last quarter cut the deficit to 91-96 at the end of the game. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Banvit made 7 blocks. The former international guard Baris Ermis (194-85) nailed 18 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists (perfect from the field making all six shots) for the winning side and American-Azerbaijan forward Charles Davis (202-84, college: Alabama) accounted for 22 points, 5 rebounds and 5 blocks. Five Banvit players scored in double figures. Banvit's coach Orhun Ene used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. American guard Gerald Fitch (191-82, college: Kentucky, agency: SportsTalent) came up with 26 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists and Latvian center Kaspars Kambala (206-78, college: UNLV, agency: Alti Sport) added 16 points and 8 rebounds respectively for Aliaga in the defeat. The victory was the fifth consecutive win for Banvit. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Fener.Ulker and Galatasaray. Loser Aliaga dropped to the eleventh place with nine games lost. They share the position with Tofas and Trabzonspor. Banvit will meet at home Bornova (#10) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Aliaga will play against Trabzonspor and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
