Regular Season Round 27: Zalgiris-Sabonio - Nafta Universitetas 72-84

There was a small surprise in Kaunas where seventh ranked Nafta Universitetas (14-11) defeated 5th ranked Zalgiris-Sabonio (16-9) 84-72 on Friday. The game was mostly controlled by Nafta Universitetas. Zalgiris-Sabonio managed to win third quarter 16-11. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Nafta Universitetas forced 20 Zalgiris-Sabonio turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. The best player for the winners was guard Mindaugas Girdziunas (188-89) who scored 26 points. Forward Julius Kazakauskas (197-90) chipped in 14 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). At the other side the best for losing team was center Gediminas Zyle (209-88) who recorded 21 points and 8 rebounds and swingman Paulius Sorokas (198-92) added 14 points and 6 assists respectively. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Zalgiris-Sabonio's coach Priit Vene rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Nafta Universitetas maintains seventh place with 14-11 record. Loser Zalgiris-Sabonio keeps the fifth position with nine games lost. Nafta Universitetas will face higher ranked LKKA-Atletas (#5) in Kaunas in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Zalgiris-Sabonio will play on the road against Akademija in Vilnius.
