Very expected game in Leverkusen where 10th ranked Bayer Giants (6-12) were defeated by second ranked SG Schwelmer Baskets (14-4) 112-107 on Saturday. Bayer Giants were trailing by 2 points at halftime but managed to get 6-point lead after three quarters before a 38-27 charge of SG Schwelmer Baskets, which allowed them to win the game. They made 37-of-45 free shots (82.2 percent) during the game, while Bayer Giants only scored sixteen points from the stripe. Strangely Bayer Giants outrebounded SG Schwelmer Baskets 38-24 including a 18-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. They shot the lights out from three sinking 13 long-distance shots on high 61.9 percentage. Bayer Giants were plagued by 33 personal fouls down the stretch. American guard David Bunts (189-79, college: Pacific) scored 30 points to lead the charge for the winners and naturalized American forward Kristofer Speier (206-81, college: Lewis-Clark) chipped in 20 points and 8 rebounds during the contest. The best for the losing side was American guard Josh Young (185-88, college: Drake) with 33 points (!!!), 6 rebounds and 4 assists (went 11 for 11 at the free throw line !!!) and his fellow American import center Justin Eller (203-87, college: Sacramento St.) produced a double-double by scoring 16 points and 11 rebounds. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players in such tough game. SG Schwelmer Baskets have an impressive five-game winning streak. They keep a position of Group North leader. Loser Bayer Giants dropped to the ninth place with 12 games lost. SG Schwelmer Baskets will face Spot Up Medien Baskets (#7) in Braunschweig in the next round where they are favorite. Bayer Giants will play on the road against Herzoege Wolfenbuettel and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
