No shocking result in a game when eighth ranked GDESSA (6-12) beat bottom-ranked Uniao Micaelense (1-18) in Ponta Delgada 79-66 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 11 points after first quarter, but they stormed back and won the game by 13 points. GDESSA made 16-of-20 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. GDESSA outrebounded Uniao Micaelense 42-29 including a 20-6 advantage in offensive rebounds. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when GDESSA made 7 blocks. It was an exceptional evening for Canadian swingman Kendel Ross (185-88, college: Dayton) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 31 points, 17 rebounds and 4 blocks (made all of her eleven free throws !!!). The former international Vera Correia (-80) accounted for 21 points and 5 rebounds for the winning side. GDESSA's coach Nuno Manaia used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Guard Carla Ribeiro (168-86) came up with 29 points and 8 steals and American power forward Ree Browne (186-84, college: Cal.St.-Dominguez H.) added 17 points and 8 rebounds respectively for Uniao Micaelense in the defeat. GDESSA maintains eighth place with 6-12 record. Uniao Micaelense lost sixth consecutive game. They stay dead last with 18 lost games. GDESSA will meet higher ranked Boa Viagem (#5) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Uniao Micaelense will play against Alges (#4).
