There was a minor upset in Funchal where 6th ranked CAB (6-8) was defeated by ninth ranked Penafiel (6-8) 70-64 on Saturday. The guests trailed by 2 points after three quarters before their 15-7 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Penafiel dominated on the defensive end, holding CAB to just 7 points in fourth quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 56 of its points in the paint compared to CAB's 32. They outrebounded CAB 41-28 including 28 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was American swingman Londrick Nolen (198-83, college: Mississippi) who had a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds. The other American import guard Jeremy Goode (175-87, college: Mt.St.Mary's) chipped in 18 points and 6 rebounds. Nolen is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Penafiel players scored in double figures. American guard Nathan Menefee (182-85, college: Evergreen St.) produced 20 points and 5 rebounds and international center Jorge Coelho (200-78) added 15 points respectively for the hosts. CAB's coach Joao Freitas rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Penafiel moved-up to sixth place, which they share with 3 other teams including defeated CAB. Penafiel will meet at home higher ranked Vitoria SC (#4) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. CAB will play against Ginasio in Figueira da Foz and hope to secure a win.
