Regular Season Round 18: Levski Sofia - Tundja Yambol 68-69

The most exciting game of round 18 in the NBL took place in Sofia. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of second-best Levski (15-4) to sixth ranked Tundja (7-12) 69-68 on Friday evening. Levski was trailing by 1 point at halftime but managed to get 7-point lead after three quarters before a 17-9 charge of Tundja, which allowed them to win the game. They dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to Levski's 26. Strangely Levski outrebounded Tundja 56-41 including a 24-10 advantage in offensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was the former international center Nikolay Varbanov (209-85, agency: Interperformances) who had a double-double by scoring 12 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Martin Durchev (200-87) chipped in 17 points. Four Tundja players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was international power forward Stefan Georgiev (206-78) who recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points and 17 rebounds (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) and American swingman Aaron Harper (199-81, college: Mississippi, agency: Strategic Sports) added 19 points and 9 rebounds respectively. Levski's coach Konstantin Papazov rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Tundja moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Cherno More. Levski at the other side keeps the second position with four games lost. Tundja is looking forward to face league's leader Lukoil Academik in Sofia in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Levski will play on the road against Balkan in Botevgrad and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
