Seventh-ranked CAB (7-10) gave a tough game to third ranked Academica (13-4) in Funchal on Saturday. The visitors from Coimbra managed to secure only three-point victory 82-79. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests trailed by 3 points at the halftime before their 27-20 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Academica made 16-of-20 free shots (80.0 percent) during the game. American forward Matthew Shaw (201-86, college: S.Illinois) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 15 rebounds (on 6-of-7 shooting from the field) for the winners and his fellow American import power forward Tommie Eddie (201-82, college: Mississippi) chipped in 21 points and 10 rebounds. Four Academica players scored in double figures. American forward Frederick Gentry (201-77, college: McNeese St., agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) responded with a double-double by scoring 29 points and 10 rebounds (on 13-of-17 shooting from the field) and the former international guard Jaime Silva (187-80) scored 14 points and 7 assists. Academica have an impressive series of seven victories in a row. They maintain third place with 13-4 record having just one points less than leader Porto Ferpinta. CAB at the other side keeps the seventh position with ten games lost. They share it with Ginasio and Sampaense. Academica are looking forward to face Vitoria SC (#5) in Guimaraes in the next round. CAB will play at home against Illiabum in Ilhavo and is hoping to prove to their supporters that this time they can win.
