There was a surprise result when eleventh ranked USC Heidelberg (12-17) defeated at home higher ranked Crailsheim Merlins (15-14) 78-68 on Sunday. The game was mostly controlled by USC Heidelberg. Crailsheim Merlins was better in second period 19-14. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. USC Heidelberg had a 32-20 advantage in offensive rebounds. Crailsheim Merlins were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. The former international power forward Bjorn Schoo (213-81, college: Northern St., agency: Court Side) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 24 points and 14 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) for the winners and forward Danilo Barthel (207-91) chipped in 14 points and 7 rebounds. American forward Frank Young (196-84, college: W.Virginia) responded with 17 points and the other American import point guard Kameron Gray (186-82, college: Oklahoma City) scored 5 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists. USC Heidelberg moved-up to tenth place, which they share with ETB Wohnbau. Loser Crailsheim Merlins keep the sixth position with 14 games lost. USC Heidelberg will face higher ranked BG Karlsruhe (#9) on the road in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory.
