Very important is a home loss of third ranked Gloria Giants (8-5) against ninth ranked Science City Jena (8-6) on Saturday night. Host Gloria Giants were defeated by Science City Jena in Duesseldorf 80-66. The game was mostly controlled by Science City Jena. Gloria Giants managed to win second period 22-19. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Science City Jena dominated down low during the game scoring 52 of its points in the paint compared to Gloria Giants' 32. It was an exceptional evening for forward Tim Schwartz (199-87) who led the winners and scored 13 points and 8 rebounds. American guard Kenny Barker (191-86, college: Alaska-Anch.) accounted for 16 points for the winning side. Five Science City Jena players scored in double figures. American guard Aubrey Reese (183-78, college: Murray St., agency: Interperformances) came up with 35 points (!!!) and Estonian forward Rait Keerles (201-80) added 10 points and 6 rebounds respectively for Gloria Giants in the defeat. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Science City Jena moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Webmoebel and Chemnitz. Loser Gloria Giants dropped to the fourth position with five games lost. Science City Jena will meet BV Chemnitz 99 (#7) on the road in the next round. Gloria Giants will play against the league's second-placed Kirchheim Knights and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
