Very important is a road loss of third ranked Ovarense (8-4) against eighth ranked Academica (5-8) on Saturday night. Visiting Ovarense was defeated by Academica in a tough game in Coimbra 75-81. It looked good early as Ovarense took an 8-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Academica took control winning two of next three quarters and eventually winning the game that evening by 6 points. Academica forced 24 Ovarense turnovers. Ovarense was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. Nigerian-American guard Richard Oruche (191-87, college: Ill.-Springfield, agency: KMG Sports Management) stepped up and scored 22 points and 5 assists for the winners and American forward Delano Thomas (203-81, college: Shawnee St.) chipped in 13 points and 6 rebounds. Oruche is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Five Academica players scored in double figures. At the losing side forward Fernando Neves (194-80) responded with 22 points and American center Christopher Lee (206-84, college: S.Carolina St.) scored 12 points and 7 rebounds. Academica moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Sampaense. Ovarense at the other side keeps the third position with four games lost. They share it with Lusitania. Academica will play against higher ranked CAB Madeira (#6) in Funchal in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Ovarense will play at home against Terceira Basket in Angra Heroismo and hopes to get back on the winning track.
