There was no surprise in Ilhavo where 10th ranked Guifoes (4-9) were defeated by third ranked Illiabum (9-4) 73-67 on Saturday. However just six-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. Guifoes trailed by 11 points at halftime and as many as 15 after three quarters before a 27-18 last quarter charge cut the deficit to 67-73 at the end of the game. Illiabum dominated on the defensive end, holding Guifoes to just 7 points in second quarter. They outrebounded Guifoes 36-21 including 25 on the defensive glass. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Illiabum made 11 blocks. Guifoes were plagued by 24 personal fouls down the stretch. American center Dain Swetalla (206-86, college: Augustana, IL) fired a double-double by scoring 22 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. Guard Pedro Morgado (182-86) chipped in 18 points and 5 rebounds. Angolan forward Joao Gaspar (196-89) produced 22 points and guard Daniel Correia (174-84) added 11 points and 4 assists respectively for lost side. Illiabum moved-up to second place, which they share with Angra. Loser Guifoes keep the tenth position with nine games lost. Illiabum will face Sangalhos (#6) at home in the next round. Guifoes will play against Gaeirense (#11) in Gaeiras and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
