Regular Season Round 17: Galatasaray - Fenerbahce 65-81

The biggest surprise of round 17 took place in Istanbulguest Fenerbahce (#1) beat lower ranked Galatasaray (#2) by 16 points 81-65 on Wednesday evening. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Galatasaray. It was a key game for the top position in the league. It was a very close game until the last quarter, when Fenerbahce's pressure prevailed and they won that period 21-9 extending their advantage to 16 points. They made 23-of-25 free shots (92.0 percent) during the game. Strangely Galatasaray outrebounded Fenerbahce 39-27 including 25 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was American forward Angel McCoughtry (185-86, college: Louisville) who scored 25 points and 5 rebounds (was perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line !!!). International center Nevriye Yilmaz (194-80) chipped in 16 points and 7 rebounds. American center Sylvia Fowles (198-85, college: LSU) produced a double-double by scoring 20 points and 10 rebounds and Italian-American swingman Diana Taurasi (182-82, college: Connecticut) added 20 points and 6 assists respectively for the hosts. Defending champion maintains first place with 15-2 record. Galatasaray at the other side keeps the second position with three games lost. Fenerbahce are looking forward to face Ceyhan Bld (#6) in Adana in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Galatasaray will play on the road against Optimum TED (#9) in Ankara and is hoping to prove to their supporters that the loss was just an accident.
