Second Stage Round 7: Suduva-Mantinga - Nafta Universitetas 83-63

Round 7 in NKL means a new league leader. The biggest surprise took place in Marijampole where host Matinga-Juod. (21-16) crushed league's leader Nafta Universitetas (23-14) 83-63 on Friday evening. The hosts trailed by 3 points after first quarter, but they stormed back to get the 12-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 83-63. Matinga-Juod. dominated on the defensive end, holding Nafta Universitetas to just 7 points in second quarter. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists comparing to just 11 passes made by Nafta Universitetas' players. Guard Aurimas Birgelis (190-88) fired 24 points and 9 assists (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) for the winners. Center Mindaugas Kalvelis (205-80) chipped in a double-double by scoring 13 points and 11 rebounds. Four Matinga-Juod. players scored in double figures. Forward Julius Kazakauskas (197-90) produced 15 points and 8 rebounds and center Arturas Gudaitis (208-93) added 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 blocks respectively for lost side. Nafta Universitetas' coach Dainius Miliunas rotated eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Newly promoted Matinga-Juod. maintains seventh place in with 21-16 record. Nafta Universitetas at the other side dropped to the second position with 14 games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Radviliskis. Nafta Universitetas will have a break next week, which should allow them to rest and make it back to the top of the standings. Matinga-Juod. will try to continue on its current victory against second ranked Nafta Universitetas in Klaipeda.
