Second Stage Round 11: Suduva-Mantinga - Zalgiris-Sabonio 87-85

Important game to mention about took place in Marijampole. Fourth ranked Matinga-Juod. (24-17) saved a 2-point victory at home edging 5th ranked Zalgiris-Sabonio (23-18) 87-85 on Friday evening. It looked good early as Zalgiris-Sabonio took an 1-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Matinga-Juod. had a 26-18 second period charge getting the lead and Zalgiris-Sabonio was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 85-87. Matinga-Juod. players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Zalgiris-Sabonio was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a great evening for guard Aurimas Birgelis (190-88) who led his team to a victory scoring 23 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). Forward Marius Valukonis (198-88) helped adding 27 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Rolandas Jakstas (200-92) responded with a double-double by scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds and guard Justas Tamulis (194-94) scored 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Four Zalgiris-Sabonio players scored in double figures. Zalgiris-Sabonio's coach Tomas Masiulis tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Newly promoted Matinga-Juod. maintains fourth place in with 24-17 record. Zalgiris-Sabonio at the other side dropped to the sixth position with 18 games lost. Matinga-Juod. will play against Mazeikiai (#5) at home in the next round. Zalgiris-Sabonio will play against the league's second-placed Radviliskis and hopes to get back on the winning track.
