Regular Season Round 1: Dzukija - Statyba 88-93

Very important is a home loss of third ranked Dzukija (0-1) against leader Statyba (1-0) on Thursday night. Host Dzukija was defeated by Statyba in a tough game in Alytus 88-93. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 23-19. But Dzukija won second period 25-24. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Statyba forced 19 Dzukija turnovers. They shot the lights out from three nailing 12 long-distance shots on high 54.5 percentage. Worth to mention a great performance of point guard Ovidijus Varanauskas (187-91) who helped to win the game recording 26 points and 9 assists. Forward Darius Tarvydas (200-91) contributed with 23 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Statyba's coach Gintautas Regina allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. American guard Bryan Harrison (188-84, college: Georgia Coll., agency: Global Sports Plaza) answered with a double-double by scoring 20 points, 5 rebounds and 10 assists and guard Tauras Skripkauskas (196-86, college: Charleston) added 22 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Dzukija. Four Dzukija players scored in double figures. Statyba keeps a position of league leader, which they share with 8 other teams. Newly promoted Dzukija still closes the standings with one game lost. Statyba's next round opponent will be bottom-ranked Zanavykas (#18) which should be an easy win for them. Dzukija will play against Zalgiris-Sabonio (#9) in Kaunas and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
