Regular Season Round 15: Zalgiris-Sabonio - Statyba 87-81

There was no surprise in Kaunas where 8th ranked Statyba (10-5) was defeated by sixth ranked Zalgiris-Sabonio (10-5) 87-81 on Thursday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Statyba won fourth quarter 25-21. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Zalgiris-Sabonio made 7 blocks. The best player for the winners was center Arturas Gudaitis (208-93) who scored 25 points and 7 rebounds. Swingman Tomas Dimsa (195-94) chipped in 20 points. At the other side the best for losing team was forward Darius Tarvydas (200-91) who recorded 26 points and 6 rebounds and point guard Ovidijus Varanauskas (187-91) added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 9 assists respectively. Five Zalgiris-Sabonio and four Statyba players scored in double figures. Zalgiris-Sabonio have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to third place, which they share with 4 other teams including defeated Statyba. Zalgiris-Sabonio will meet Birstono (#14) in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Statyba will play against Nafta Universitetas (#15) in Klaipeda and hope to secure a win.
