Regular Season Round 9: CAB Madeira - Alges 55-58

A very close game took place in Funchal between Alges and CAB Madeira. Fourth ranked Alges (7-1) got a very close victory on the road over 5th ranked CAB Madeira (5-2). Alges managed to escape with a 3-point win 58-55 on Saturday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of CAB Madeira. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But CAB Madeira won third quarter 20-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded CAB Madeira 48-30 including 16 on the offensive glass. Great defensive blocking was one of the keys in this match when Alges made 7 blocks. The best player for the winners was American forward Laura Broomfield (185-90, college: N.Carolina) who had a double-double by scoring 19 points and 26 rebounds. point guard Jessica Almeida (172-93) chipped in 15 points. At the other side the best for losing team was American swingman Carmen Reynolds (182-90, college: Michigan) who recorded 21 points and the other American import forward Jheri Booker (183, college: Tennessee St.) added 8 points and 8 rebounds respectively. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for Alges. Defending champion moved-up to second place, which they share with Lombos Quinta. Loser CAB Madeira dropped to the sixth position with two games lost. Alges will meet at home Academico FC (#10) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. CAB Madeira will play against GDESSA (#4) in Barreiro and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
