Regular Season Round 18: Statyba - Birstono 77-79

Very important is a home loss of third ranked Statyba (12-6) against fourteenth ranked Birstono (6-12) on Saturday night. Host Statyba was edged by Birstono in a tough game in Vilnius 77-79. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Statyba. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 21-16. But Statyba won second period 21-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Birstono won last quarter 22-21. Paulius Kleiza (195-88) notched 29 points and 7 rebounds to lead the effort and Simas Raupys (195-94) supported him with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Four Birstono players scored in double figures. Even 32 points and 8 assists by point guard Ovidijus Varanauskas (187-91) did not help to save the game for Statyba. Forward Darius Tarvydas (200-91) added 12 points. Birstono maintains fourteenth position with 6-12 record. Statyba at the other side dropped to the fifth place with six games lost. They share the position with Suduva-Mantinga. Birstono's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will travel locally in Kaunas to the arena Zalgiris-Sabonio.
