Very expected game when 9th ranked Istanbul Universitesi (6-7) was defeated at home by fifth ranked Mersin (8-5) 74-61 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Mersin. Istanbul Universitesi managed to win second period 20-16. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded Istanbul Universitesi 40-29 including 26 on the defensive glass. The game was dominated by American players. Guard Shavonte Zellous (178-86, college: Pittsburgh) stepped up and scored 22 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and forward Erlana Larkins (185-86, college: N.Carolina) chipped in 10 points, 20 rebounds and 4 assists. Five Mersin players scored in double figures. At the losing side center Jessica Davenport (196-85, college: Ohio St.) responded with 18 points and 6 rebounds (on 8-of-10 shooting from the field) and guard Essence Carson (183-86, college: Rutgers) scored 14 points and 6 rebounds. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Mersin. They maintain fifth place with 8-5 record. Loser Istanbul Universitesi keeps the ninth position with seven games lost. They share it with Canik Bld. Mersin will meet at home Antakya (#7) in the next round. Istanbul Universitesi will play against Kayseri and hope to secure a win.
