Sixth-ranked Vitoria SC (6-7) made lots of trouble for second ranked CAB Madeira (11-3) in Guimaraes. The visitors from Funchal managed to secure only one-point victory 78-77. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 24-16. But Vitoria SC won second period 23-18. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when CAB Madeira won last quarter 19-20. They shot the lights out from three nailing 14 long-distance shots on high 51.9 percentage. The former international point guard Jaime Silva (187-80) saved the victory by scoring 29 points. Spanish power forward Jose Manuel Coego (204-78) contributed with 10 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. CAB Madeira's coach Joao Freitas allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Naturalized Cape Verdean guard Ivan Almeida (198-89, college: Stonehill) replied with 18 points and 8 rebounds and American guard Charlie Swiggett (185-86, college: Wisc.-Milwaukee) added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists in the effort for Vitoria SC. Four Vitoria SC players scored in double figures. CAB Madeira maintains second position with 11-3 record having just -2 point less than leader Benfica. Vitoria SC at the other side keeps the sixth place with seven games lost. They share the position with Barcelos. CAB Madeira will play against Lusitania (#8) in Angra in the next round where they are favorite. Vitoria SC will play on the road against Fisica in Torres Vedras and hopes to get back on the winning track.
