Regular Season Round 16: Academica - Alges 80-76

Date: February 16, 2013
Very expected game in Coimbra where 10th ranked Alges (2-12) were defeated by fourth ranked Academica (10-5) 80-76 on Saturday. However just four-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 30-18. But Alges won second period 20-11. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Academica won last quarter 21-18. Forward Joao Balseiro (192-87) fired 23 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. American-Spanish forward Arnette Hallman (199-88) chipped in 18 points and 9 rebounds. American forward Jamarkus Holt (205, college: Delta St.) produced a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds and guard Antonio Pires (185-86) added 10 points and 10 assists respectively for lost side. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Academica maintains fourth position with 10-5 record. Alges lost fourth consecutive game. Newly promoted team keep the tenth place with 12 games lost. Academica will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Alges will play against Lusitania (#8) in Angra and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
