Thirteenth-ranked Rapid (4-16) gave a tough game to sixth ranked Alexandria (13-7) in Bucuresti on Saturday. The visitors from Alexandria managed to secure only three-point victory 66-63. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests trailed by 6 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 6-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 66-63. Alexandria forced 22 Rapid turnovers and outrebounded them 39-25 including a 12-1 advantage in offensive rebounds. Rapid was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. It was a great evening for American forward Ashley Arlen (187-90, college: Wayne St., NE, agency: Gamble Sports Management) who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 16 rebounds. The former international forward Georgiana Rus (189-87) helped adding 17 points and 8 rebounds. The former international guard Florina Diaconu (170-82) responded with 37 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds (on 14-of-18 shooting from the field) and swingman Claudia Ene (178-88) scored 12 points. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Alexandria. They maintain sixth place with 13-7 record. Rapid lost their fourth game in a row. They keep the thirteenth position with 16 games lost. Alexandria will face higher ranked Sf.Gheorghe (#4) in Sfantu Gheorghe in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Rapid will play on the road against Cluj Napoca (#12) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
