Ninth-ranked Botas (10-14) gave a tough game to fourth ranked Mersin (18-6) on Sunday. Mersin managed to secure only two-point victory 79-77. However their fans expected much easier game. The hosts trailed by 2 points at the halftime before their 28-13 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game. Mersin made 20-of-23 free shots (87.0 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was American forward Erlana Larkins (185-86, college: N.Carolina) who had a double-double by scoring 13 points, 17 rebounds and 6 assists. The other American import guard Shavonte Zellous (178-86, college: Pittsburgh) chipped in 26 points (went 12 for 12 at the free throw line !!!). At the other side the best for losing team was American-Armenian swingman Quianna Chaney (180-86, college: LSU) who recorded 15 points and 9 assists and American center Courtney Paris (191-87, college: Oklahoma) added 13 points and 9 rebounds respectively. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Botas' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Mersin have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain fourth position with 18-6 record. Botas lost third consecutive game. They keep the ninth place with 14 games lost. Mersin will meet at home Canik Bld (#11) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Botas will play against Antakya in Hatay and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
