Everything went according to plan when tenth ranked Aliaga (9-15) defeated 12th ranked Mersin (7-17) in Akdeniz 91-81 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Aliaga. Mersin managed to win third quarter 22-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Aliaga had a 32-16 advantage in offensive rebounds. The winners were led by American guard Lionel Chalmers (184-80, college: Xavier) who scored that evening 27 points and the other American import swingman Preston Shumpert (198-79, college: Syracuse) supported him with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Even 30 points and 9 rebounds by naturalized American forward Ali Karadeniz (203-80, college: Arizona) did not help to save the game for Mersin. American guard J.P. Prince (201-87, college: Tennessee) added 16 points and 12 rebounds. Five Aliaga and four Mersin players scored in double figures. Aliaga moved-up to ninth place, which they share with Erdemir and Gaziantep. Loser Mersin keeps the twelfth position with 17 games lost. They share it with Turk Telekom. Aliaga will meet higher ranked Besiktas (#6) in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Mersin will play against the league's second-placed Anadolu Efes (#2) where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.
