Regular Season Round 21: Academica - Vitoria SC 73-68

Date: April 6, 2013
Rather predictable result when third ranked Academica (14-5) won against 5th ranked Vitoria SC (10-9) in Coimbra 73-68 on Saturday. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Vitoria SC won fourth quarter 21-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Academica forced 21 Vitoria SC turnovers. It was a good game for the former international point guard Mario Fernandes (176-82) who led his team to a victory with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. American-Spanish forward Arnette Hallman (199-88) contributed with a double-double by scoring 13 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. Naturalized Cape Verdean guard Ivan Almeida (198-89, college: Stonehill) answered with a double-double by scoring 21 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) and the former international swingman Jose Silva (194-89) added 14 points in the effort for Vitoria SC. Academica have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They maintain third place with 14-5 record having four points less than leader Benfica. Vitoria SC at the other side keeps the fifth position with nine games lost. Academica will face Fisica (#9) in Torres Vedras in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Vitoria SC will play at home against Lusitania (#8) in Angra.
