There was no surprise when 10th ranked BBC Bayreuth (2-3) was defeated at home by leader EWE Baskets (4-0) 78-65 on Sunday. The guests trailed by 2 points after three quarters before their 25-10 charge, which allowed them to win the game. EWE Baskets made 18-of-20 free shots (90.0 percent) during the game. The best player for the winners was American guard Chris Kramer (191-88, college: Purdue) who scored 12 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Naturalized Dutch forward Robin Smeulders (206-87, college: Portland, agency: Court Side) chipped in 17 points. EWE Baskets' coach Sebastian Machowski allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. American-Puerto Rican point guard Kevin Hamilton (193-84, college: Holy Cross) produced 12 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists and American forward Ronnie Burrell (204-83, college: NC-Greensboro, agency: Pro One Sports) added 16 points and 5 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for EWE Baskets. They moved-up to second place. Loser BBC Bayreuth dropped to the eleventh position with three games lost. EWE Baskets will face Telekom Bsk (#4) in Bonn in the next round. BBC Bayreuth will play on the road against Brose Bask. (#8) in Bamberg.
