Regular Season Round 5: Leipzig - Licher Baeren 78-67

There was no surprise when 10th ranked Licher Baeren (1-4) lost on the road to third ranked USC Leipzig (4-1) 78-67 on Sunday. The hosts were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Naturalized American forward Eric Vierneisel (201-85, college: California) orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 26 points and 10 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). Swingman Jorge Schmidt (193-85) contributed with 13 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Worth to mention Vierneisel played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped get the job in pro basketball. Four USC Leipzig players scored in double figures. American guard Jermale Jones (186-86, college: Tuskegee) answered with 20 points and 5 rebounds and American-Italian point guard Joseph Fuca (182-89, college: Master's) added 15 points and 4 assists in the effort for Licher Baeren. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for USC Leipzig. They moved-up to second place in Group South, which they share with Hanau. Licher Baeren lost their fourth game in a row. They keep the tenth position with four games lost. USC Leipzig will face Leitershofen (#12) in Diedorf in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Licher Baeren will play at home against Baunach and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
